I can’t help it.. I wanted to.. but I’m up on this bandwagon.. the Marie Claire article on Food Bloggers was so utterly ridiculous.. I can’t help it. But I’ll keep it short & sweet..
America is unhealthy.. any one disagree? Young generations today have shorter life expectancies than their parents for the first time EVER. It’s completely “acceptable” to eat multiple meals from fast food chains on a daily basis, but yet the adult who brings their lunch everyday is ridiculed.
Being conscious of what you’re eating is not an eating disorder; nor is recognizing that if you have a big dessert one night, you might want to exercise a bit more the next day, and have a salad for lunch over a plate of macaroni & cheese. That is not disordered eating, it is common sense.
Truth: Reading about food & exercise everyday could have negative effects on some people, but those are struggles that person has, and has nothing to do with the blogger’s content.
The author was careless and the article is clearly very one sided.
The problem is, general America is not healthy, so anyone who pays attention to their nutrition and fitness is suddenly the odd one out.
Oh and as far as the issue with ‘posting everything you eat’.. well first off. .who freaking cares?! If reading healthy living blogs demonstrates nothing else, it’s that there is no one specific “right” or “wrong” way to be healthy. We all have different needs, both nutritionally and physically, and the differences between even just the 6 women mentioned are vast.
Simply.. I have been inspired by these women and many others time and time again.
HOW ABOUT THIS INSTEAD (Inspired by Wearing Mascara.)…
Funny, I actually had a ‘what have you learned’ question the other day.. but the situation calls for an expanded version..
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED/REMINDED OF/GAINED/DISCOVERED/BEEN INSPIRED BY FROM THIS HEALTHY LIVING BLOG COMMUNITY?
I’ll start with a few..
LETS HEAR YOURS!
And simply because a beautiful breakfast pic seems appropriate (I also discovered “Yogurt” Messes and the 100 different ways you can use pumpkin from reading blogs)..
Pumpkin, Goat’s Milk Yogurt, Kashi, dried Cranberries, Coconut..
I have to say I am so thankful you blog and share your experience and food creations with the world, how very generous of you!
Let's keep on loving food, celebrating life, being amazing and loving women, having fun, training with passion, helping others, and living everyday to the fullest!
Great post Alyson. I learned everything I know from my trainer. I used to think that dry lettuce and beer was the diet for me. I LOVE to eat now!!! I feel so alive…well because my body loves eating healthy foods.
I have learned more about stomach issues etc…which I am now plagued with so that a plus.
I totally agree with you! I haven't read the article yet because I don't want to get frustrated. I know its their opinion, so thats fine. America is unhealthy at the moment and I think focusing on EATING HEALTHY is about BALANCE. You must think about it daily, its a lifestyle! AMen to that!!
I am so thankful for finding this healthy blogging community! I've been opened up to a new world of different foods and recipes (that I love!) that I otherwise may not have found or tried. More importantly, I get so much inspiration and motivation from all these amazing people… on both a food and fitness level. Personally, I don't like posting the foods I eat everyday (mostly because of time constraints), but I love reading about the creative combinations that others are eating and see nothing wrong about it.
I've also learned that being "healthy" has a different definition for every person… some are vegetarians or vegans, some run while others prefer yoga. Neither is right or wrong, it's just how each chooses to live his/her life.
Wonderful post!
I looked on the Marie Claire website, and I could not find that article. Anyhow, I agree with you that it was poorly written and obviously the author did not research their stuff. I love the friends I have made through the blogosphere and many things I have learned! Like: overnight oats, yogurt messes, kale chips, sweet potato fries, and green monsters. I also never would have eaten chia seeds, nutritional yeast, or lara bars. It's like a whole new world of {happy}, healthy living, that I'm so freakin' glad I stumbled upon
Great post. I didn't see that article, but I agree with your points. And there is not much better than oatmeal with PB first thing in the morning. MMMMM
I love to read blogs to share ideas for healthy food and lifestyle, and struggles, makes me feel like I"m human!! And there are SO MANY powerful women out there, the community is amazing!
I am so with the first point on your list there… people love to tell others that it is this way or the highway. NOT! WE all have different bods & genes & we all have different lives so it is only obvious that we each need to find our own program that works for us. Yes, we may take bits & pieces from one or another but we can tweak it to be our own. The only thing I would say is that the food intake & your food choices will be at least 75% of the weight loss equation 99% of the time.
I think this is it:

TOTALLY agree with you.. we are all different and we all need different things!
PS yo oatmeal looks awesome
I have learned so much from the food blog community. I am a dietitian so you would think I have it all figured out but there are so many great recipes and trends to follow from real people out there eating real food. In fact, as bad as it is to say this, I have never really liked vegetables. Insert gasp here
Reading about all of the unique vegetables that everybody are trying has inspired me to do the same. Now I am eating things like okra fries and kale chips.
Jumping in late here….I haven't yet read the Marie Claire article, but I am rather shocked at the irresponsibility of such an article. Perhaps the writer was trying to stir up some controversy, either that or the writer on the fast food band wagon and looks down at anyone living a healthy lifestyle. Maybe one day that person will look in the mirror and see the need to make a change.
